Ramps, Transfer Systems, and Ground-Level Play

Accessible Route

An accessible route is the continuous, unobstructed path connecting accessible elements and spaces. Inside a play area it can include ground-level routes, ramps, platforms, lifts, and transfer systems. The practical question is not only whether a route exists, but which entry points, exits, seats, and play experiences it connects.

Ramped Elevated Play

A ramp continues the accessible route to elevated components, allowing a person to reach connected levels while remaining in a mobility device. Ramps do not guarantee access to every platform or activity. Ask how high the ramp goes, whether landings provide room to turn, which components are connected, and whether congestion or play features narrow the path.

Transfer Systems

A transfer system uses a platform, transfer steps, and supports so a person can move from a mobility device onto a composite structure. The device remains at ground level. This can open elevated play to some users while being unusable for someone who cannot transfer or move through the structure without the device. Look for the platform height, clear approach space, supports, and distance to the desired activity.

Ground-Level Play

Ground-level play can include panels, tables, musical features, water or sand play, spring riders, motion equipment, imaginative spaces, and social gathering areas. The Access Board requires at least one of each type of ground-level play component present to be on an accessible route. Families may still want to know how many choices exist, whether peers can play nearby, and whether the activities offer more than a single stationary panel.

A Better Comparison

Do not reduce the decision to ramped or not ramped. Compare a simple map of reachable experiences: arrival route, ground-level choices, elevated route, transfer points, slides or exits that return to an accessible surface, motion play, and spaces for resting or regrouping. This reveals whether a design supports sustained participation or only reaches the edge of the equipment.

Access Begins Outside The Play Area

The play-area standards address routes within the playground boundary, while the larger site also needs a usable path from parking, transit, sidewalks, buildings, and amenities. A beautifully ramped structure may still be hard to reach because of a gravel approach, steep curb route, locked gate, long distance, or missing curb cut. Follow the complete journey and identify which part of the route comes from an official plan, a current operator page, or a firsthand observation.

Check How A Child Returns To Ground Level

Reaching an elevated component is only part of the experience. A slide or other exit may return a child to a different area of the structure. Confirm that the landing surface connects back to the accessible route and that a mobility device, caregiver, or companion can reach the exit. If someone must leave a device at a transfer platform, consider how far the play path travels and whether the return route works for that person.

Space For Caregivers And Shared Play

Minimum route widths do not describe how a busy playground feels. Turning at landings, passing another mobility device, waiting near a popular panel, or assisting with a transfer can require additional room. Shade posts, benches, play traffic, and parked strollers can narrow an otherwise compliant path. Look for circulation space around high-use components and whether children using different access methods can remain near one another during play.
